Ann was born on May 19th, 1809 in Darwen and her baptism took place on July 27th, 1809 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel.1 2  Ann's father was William (Will) Mather and her mother was Betty Beswick.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Chambers. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Abraham, William, Betty and Nancy.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
