Betty was born on June 23rd, 1814 in Darwen and her baptism took place on December 27th, 1814 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel.1 2  Betty's father was William (Will) Mather and her mother was Betty Beswick.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Chambers. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Abraham, William, Ann and Nancy.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
