James was born on March 22nd, 1799 in Bolton and his baptism took place in 1700 in Dukes Alley Chapel (NC).1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Ellen Mercer.  His paternal grandparents were William Greshon and Elizabeth Mather. He had six brothers named Stephen, James, Martha, Stephen, Martha and Jno.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at 3 months old in June 1799 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on June 10th, 1799 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
