Giles' father was Thomas Brooks Mather and his mother was Jane Mellor. His paternal grandparents were Giles Mather and Sarah Brook. He had two brothers and a sister, named Harold, Wilfred and Muriel. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 63 on November 18th, 1965 in Southport.
