Mary was born in 1827 in Breightmet.1  Mary's father was John Lomax and her mother was Sarah Bracewell.  Her paternal grandparents were George Lomax and Catherine Crompton. She had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the three known children.
