Ivy was born on July 25th, 1907 in Bolton and her baptism took place on September 8th, 1907 at St. Thomas the Apostle (Halliwell).1 2  Ivy's father was James Frederick Ling and her mother was Sarah Ann Welsby.  Her maternal grandparents were Josiah Welsby and (Ruth) Ellen Shaw. She had three brothers and a sister, named James, William, Clifford and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the five children.

‌Ivy and George were married in a religious ceremony on October 1st, 1927 at St. George (Little Bolton).3
