Clifford's father was James Frederick Ling and his mother was Sarah Ann Welsby. His maternal grandparents were Josiah Welsby and (Ruth) Ellen Shaw. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Ivy and Mary. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 60 in June 1980 in Bolton. His burial was on June 30th, 1980 in Lancashire.²³
