James' father was James Lindley and his mother was Charlotte Dawson. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Dawson and Martha Millington. He had a brother and three sisters, named Stanley, Martha, Frances and Lillian. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 57 in 1942.
