James was born in 1863 in Neston.¹ James' father was John Lewis and his mother was Mary Davies. His paternal grandparents were James Lewis and Bridget Nowland. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, William, Annie and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the six children.
