William was born in June 1862 in Little Bolton.1  William's father was Edmund Lever and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Welsby. He had two sisters named Sarah and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Jane.
