Emma's father was James Leech and her mother was Nancy (Nanny) Wood. Her maternal grandparents were James Wood and Martha Iredale. She had four brothers named James, Dan, Sam and Ben. She was the oldest of the five known children. She had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Hanson, Isaac, Friend, Sam and Ann.
