Walter's father was Walter Edmonds Lawrence and his mother was Rachel Bowling. His maternal grandparents were James Holder Bowling and Maria Mather. He had a brother named William. He was the older of the two children. He died at the age of 82 on March 10th, 1965 in Blackburn.²
