Andrew's father was George Kay and his mother was Ann Rhodes. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Kay and Nancy Mather. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, Samuel, George, John, Mary, Patients, Nancy, Eliza and Annie. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
