Joseph's father was Richard Jones and his mother was Rachel Bennett. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Elizabeth Millington. He had two brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Rachel, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Martha and Alice. He was the youngest of the nine children.
