John was born in 1781 in Entwistle and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1781 at St. Anne (Turton).1  John's father was James Isherwood and his mother was Susan Crompton. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Ralph, Robert, Harry, Samuel, William, Margaret, Anne, Jane and Mary.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
