James' father was Thomas Isherwood and his mother was Margaret Vickers (not Bickerstaff). His paternal grandparents were Ralph Isherwood and Ann Mather. He had two brothers and a sister, named Ralph, Thomas and Mary. He was the youngest of the four children.
