Howcroft was born in March 1782 in Over Hulton and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1782 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Howcroft's father was John Howcroft and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Watson. He had two brothers and a sister, named Richard, James and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four known children.
