James was born in September 1773 in Over Hulton and his baptism took place on September 11th, 1773 at St. Mary (Deane).1  James' father was John Howcroft and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Watson. He had two brothers and a sister, named Richard, Howcroft and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four known children.
