Ellen's father was Peter Howarth and her mother was Grace Crosse.  Her paternal grandparents were Lawrence Howarth and Alice Holden. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Lawrence, Thomas, Thomas, Richard, James, John, Lawrence and Alice.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
