Nelly, known as Ellen, was born in May 1789 in Entwistle and her baptism took place on May 31st, 1789 at Turton Chapel.1  Ellen's father was George Holt and her mother was Betty Bentley. She had six brothers and four sisters, named William, George, James, John, Jacob, Charles, Peggy, Betty, Mary and Alice.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.
