John was born in 1752 in Great Lever and his baptism took place on August 28th, 1752 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was Peter Holt and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Holt and Ellen; his maternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and <unknown>. He had a brother and four sisters, named Adam, Margaret, Ellen, Betty and Ellen.  He was the third youngest of the six children. He had two half-sisters named Ann and Mary.
