Ellen was born in 1761 in Deane and her baptism took place there on January 17th, 1761.1  Ellen's father was Peter Holt and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Howarth.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Holt and Ellen; her maternal grandparents were Adam Howarth and <unknown>. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Adam, John, Margaret, Ellen and Betty.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had two half-sisters named Ann and Mary.
