Benjamin's father was Joseph Holt and his mother was Sarah Lomax. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Holt and Elizabeth (Betty) Nuttall; his maternal grandparents were James Lomax and Nancy (Mary) Holt. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Nancy, James, Mary, Amelia, Elizabeth, Sarah, Betsy and Harriet. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
