Amelia's father was Joseph Holt and her mother was Sarah Lomax. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Holt and Elizabeth (Betty) Nuttall; her maternal grandparents were James Lomax and Nancy (Mary) Holt. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Nancy, Benjamin, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Betsy and Harriet. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
