Sarah's father was James Hulme and her mother was Betty Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Thornley. She had a brother and four sisters, named James, Mary, Susannah, Elizabeth and Rachel.  She was the second youngest of the six known children.
