Thomas was born in December 1882 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Lewis, Henry and Gertrude.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
