Lewis' father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson.  Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Thomas, Henry and Gertrude.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 47 in 1926 in Bolton.²
