Henry was born in June 1886 in Bolton.1  Henry's father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson.  Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Lewis, Thomas and Gertrude.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
