Joseph was born in June 1877 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson.  Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton were his grandparents through his mother's adoption. He had three brothers and a sister, named Lewis, Thomas, Henry and Gertrude.  He was the oldest of the five children.

‌Joseph and Caroline were married in a religious ceremony in December 1899 at St. Paul (Halliwell).2
