Joseph was born in June 1877 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was Thomas Beswick Holland and his mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson. He had three brothers and a sister, named Lewis, Thomas, Henry and Gertrude.  He was the oldest of the five children.
