Gertrude was born in March 1890 in Bolton.1  Gertrude's father was Thomas Beswick Holland and her mother was Mary Alice Atherton Tomlinson.  Thomas Bolton Tomlinson and Ellen Atherton were her grandparents through her mother's adoption. She had four brothers named Joseph, Lewis, Thomas and Henry.  She was the youngest of the five children.
