William's father was Thomas Hickson and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Martha and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died in 1880 in Farnworth.¹
