Martha's father was Thomas Hickson and her mother was Mary Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. She had two brothers and a sister, named James, William and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the four children.  She died at the age of 6 in 1879 in Farnworth.¹
