Thomas was born in 1849. Thomas' father was Joseph Hartley and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Booth. His maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Adam, John, Richard and Mary. He was the youngest of the six children.
