Richard was born in 1845. Richard's father was Joseph Hartley and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Booth. His maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Adam, John, Thomas and Mary. He was the second youngest of the six children.
