Adam's father was Joseph Hartley and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Booth. His maternal grandparents were Richard Booth and Catherine Whalley. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, John, Richard, Thomas and Mary. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 26 in April 1865 in Harwood. His burial was on April 30th, 1865 in Harwood.²
