James' father was <unknown> and his mother was Susannah Slater.  His maternal grandparents were George Slater and Sarah (Sally) Whitehead. He had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Clara.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named James and Thomas.  He died in June 1868 in Burnley.²
