Joan's father was Norman Stanley Hamer and her mother was Bertha Isherwood. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Alice Ann Crook. She had two sisters named Doris and Marjorie. She was the second oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 74 in 1994.
