John's father was Henry Gibson and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Giles. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Cuthbert, Thomas, Mary, Jane, Ann, Ann and Betty.  He died at the age of 80 in July 1857 in Blackburn.  He was buried on July 3rd, 1857 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Blackburn).²
