Ellen's father was Ralph Eddowes and her mother was Jane Davies. Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Eddowes and Abigail Blythen. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Ralph, Harriett, Caroline, Emma, Elizabeth and Jane. She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
