Joseph's father was John Eastwood and his mother was Martha Shaw. His paternal grandparents were Eli Eastwood and Nancy Garside. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Eli, William, John, Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth. He was the sixth oldest of the seven children. He died as an infant at 10 months old in October 1844 in Longwood. His burial was on October 23rd, 1844 in Golcar.²¹
