Frederick's father was Ernest Dyson and his mother was Hannah Wilkinson. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Dyson and Lucy Thorpe; his maternal grandparents were William Wilkinson and Mary Whip. He had a brother and three sisters, named Leslie, Gwendoline, Elsie and Barbara. He was the third oldest of the five children.
