Elsie's father was Ernest Dyson and her mother was Hannah Wilkinson. Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Dyson and Lucy Thorpe; her maternal grandparents were William Wilkinson and Mary Whip. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Frederick, Leslie, Gwendoline and Barbara. She was the second oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 76 in 1978.
