James was born in 1867 in Droylsden.1   James' father was John Doxey and his mother was Sarah Worthington.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Doxey and Hannah Wimston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, George, Richard, Frank, Hannah, Clara and Sara.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
