Mary was born in March 1839 in Accrington.¹

Mary's father was James Cunliffe and her mother was Jenny (Jane) Chambers. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Ben, James, Robert, Henry, Nancy, Alice and Ellen. She was the youngest of the nine children.

- Mary was born at Oswaldtwistle, where several Cunliffe families live.
  
  Mary was at Oswaldtwistle with her grandparents Henry and Hannah Cunliffe (68 & 64), retired farmers in 1861. However they are too young to be the parents of her father James (b.1796).
