Ben was born in 1823 in Accrington and his baptism took place on March 2nd, 1823 in Church Kirk.1  Ben's father was James Cunliffe and his mother was Jenny (Jane) Chambers. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Robert, Henry, Nancy, Alice, Ellen and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
