William was born in June 1874 in Atherton. William's father was Nicholas Croston and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Edge. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Bessy. He had an adopted brother and an adopted sister, named John and Ann.
