Simon's father was James Cocker and his mother was Jane Mather.  His maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Reuben, Edmund, Mary, Sarah, Alice, Sophia, Rhoda, Susannah and Cordelia.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
