Sarah was born in 1859 in Darwen.1  Sarah's father was James Cocker and her mother was Jane Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Reuben, Edmund, Simon, Mary, Alice, Sophia, Rhoda, Susannah and Cordelia.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
