James' father was James Buckley Jnr and his mother was Margaret Platt.  His paternal grandparents were James Buckley Snr and Elisabeth (Betty) Cresswell. He had a brother and six sisters, named John, Mary, Betty, Sarah, Ann, Alice and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
