William's father was Richard Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Kendricke. His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Anne Gardener; his maternal grandparents were Richard Kendricke and Elizabeth Webenham. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard, John, Thomas, Randle or Ralph, Thomas, Elizabeth, Anna and Margaret. John and William were twins.
